There are many things to consider when you are a student shipping your stuff to your new college or school. If you want to be successful at school then its important to know what type of furniture you will need in the first place. Most things you will be able to purchase at your college town, while at the same time there are somethings that you just can’t leave home without.
For students there are generally three categories that you need to consider when you are shipping to your new school. The first categorize is the excessive baggage that you will take on the plane, airlines are now charging for extra baggage so consider this when you are packing your stuff for the day of the flight Most airlines have begun to charge additional fees that are dependent upon weight and size of the bags being flown. Take this extra fee into consideration before you plan on paying for extra bags. Be sure to double check your bags weight BEFORE heading to the airport as there are additional fees for bags that are over the 50 lb weight limit. If you are flying in with your family you’ll want to make sure that you bring as much with them as possible.
Boxed items comprise of the second largest category of items that you will be shipping, these are the items that must be boxed and usually are composed of memorabilia. These are things like cases, books, picture frames, etc. Usually these are the type of things that make your room memorable and unique from the others. These items will require you to ship them, which can cost a pretty penny if you aren’t smart about it. Be sure to get quotes from several companies as pricing will vary tremendously.
The third and final category of items that you will be shipping to college is your furniture. This is an unrealistic request to ship to college as the actual cost for shipping typically outweighs the actual cost of the furniture itself. Don’t get caught up in the idea that you won’t be able to replace that nightstand, or that things may not match student shipping services, this is college after all. Don’t pay a premium either for new furniture, I’d highly suggest buying used furniture. Since you are only in college, expect that whatever furniture you end up purchasing could get ruined or destroyed. I’d buy some used furniture with the intention of destroying it. College is a place to have fun, and not stress out about furniture.
Before you end up determining which shipping company you will be using be sure to take a look at the available companies on the market. By spending the proper amount of time you could end up saving yourself an average of $300 on shipping.
