What would life be like without plastic, many of the things that we own and use each and every day are made from plastics. Plastics are in our workplace, at our homes, and everywhere in our lives. The innovation of plastic has helped push our society much further than it would be without plastics, although the biggest inconvenience that we have is when we have to clean the plastic. What type of products do we use, and what are the best plastic cleaning methods?
The reason that plastics are so popular is they are extremely durable. The truth is that plastics shouldn’t require a large amount of maintenance and only needs a little bit of attention to cleaning now and then. The first thing that you need to consider is the type of plastic that you will be cleaning. First and foremost you’ll want to use warm to hot water to give plastics an initial cleaning. Don’t use cold water, cold water doesn’t do a good job of breaking down and removing bacteria.
Begin by rinsing the object with hot water, you’ll also want to use a sponge. At this time you don’t need to use any soap. Don’t use a hard brush as you’ll scratch the service and possibly cause permanent damage. Once you have finished with the initial rinse you’ll want to focus on the cleaning compound. Be sure to use a non acidic and non alkaline type of cleaning solution as an acidic or alkaline as it will eventually break down your plastics causing them to be less durable. You will want to use soaps, or specialized cleaning solutions from the store. At this time you want to create a mixture of both warm water and your cleaning solution. Since you started by rinsing the products and giving them a quick scrub they can be cleaned easily.
If you are cleaning plastic something that is small make sure you don’t put it in the dishwasher, nearly all plastics will melt in a dishwasher. As with most plastics when you begin to heat them up tremendously they will get hot and melt. Avoid things like boiling water or devices that utilize boiling water such as dishwashers, washing machines and stoves that have boiling water. Plan and simple plastics worst enemy is boiling water. That means things like actual hot temperatures as well so avoid microwaves, ovens and hair driers. Heat will destroy the structural integrity of any type of plastic.
If you are going to be cleaning chairs or outside furniture, you’ll want to use a different type of solution. You’ll want to grab a sponge and bucket with warm water and bleach. Start by washing down your chairs with a hose. Once you’ve done an initial spray, which will help the cleaning process, now is when you’ll want to use the bleach hot water mix. Now is the time to roll up your sleeves and get to work, at this time you wanna grab your brush and begin using those muscles to scrub the chairs. We typically recommend letting the chairs sit for about 5 minutes after you have washed them, faster which the dirt will really begin to break down. At this point you should have a some great clean patio chairs.
The rules apply to all types of plastics so it really doesn’t matter what kinda plastic you are cleaning, if you want to maintain your plastics stick with these basic rules. The plastic that you may want to maintain will eventually begin to break down and it’ll never be the same.
