It’s pretty common knowledge that Beets are not the most popular item in the produce department. That became evident to me after heading to my local grocery store and picking up some beets and having the cash register lady ask me what they were. She asked me what Beets were! After doing a little bit of research it became pretty evident that people didn’t know what beets were and that they didn’t know how to cook them.
Beets not only taste great, and they are also extremely healthy for you. Beets can help get rid of tumors, fevers, infections and many other ailments. Beets also make a fantastic natural laxative, that the Egyptians were famous for using. Not only are the a great digestive aid, but they are known to cure many blood related problems. Rich in vitamins C an A, as well as potassium, sodium, calcium and magnesium. South Africa has been using beetroots to help those combat the feelings that are associated with AIDs.
Below you will find the best methods to cook and use beets, watch out you may fall in love with beets.
Make sure that you remove the leaves from the beat and wash them thoroughly before you begin cooking. Wash them thoroughly! After cleaning and trimming place your beets into a roasting pan, also make sure that you have added a little water to the pan so that they get thoroughly cooked. Once you’ve roasted the beets for thirty to fourty-five minutes they should be fully cooked, double check by piercing them with a knife. If you can pierce through it then that means that they are cooked.
Another alternative to roasting is boiling, if you’d like to boil your beets then then put them into boiling water for twenty to thirty minutes until they are tender. For an even faster way to cook beets, simply throw them into the microwave, some microwaves will vary in time so I suggest starting with 8 minutes and adding more time if needed, be sure to cook them until they are tender.
If you want to liven up the flavor of the beets add some orange juice, ginger or even both. If you want to have a different, more conservative flavor we suggest dressing the beets in a vinaigrette, we don’t recommend serving cold beets as most are served at warm or room temperature. For a more hearty salad be sure to add hard boiled egg, parsley and sweet onion.
We suggest making a beet salad if you are new to using beets. Start by removing the leaves and cutting the beets into 1 inch cuts. Again make sure they are clean. After adding the beets to boiling water let them cook for 40 minutes. The bigger the beet, the longer the cooking time.
After they have been cooked, how to cook fresh beets placing them into cold water allows you to bring them to room temperature. You will now need to remove the beet skin, it’s best to do this after the beets have been cooled. This is best achieved by using a small knife, rather than a peeler. Peelers remove too much of the beet because of how soft a boiled beet is. This is the messy part though and you will likely be covered in beet juice after working with the beets. Be sure to wear an apron or cover as beet juice will stain. After you’ve peeled the beets, cut them, add some fresh garlic and salt, and mayonnaise for dressing, be sure to mix the salad and you are all set! An easy dish using beets.
