What would life be like without plastic, plastics are a huge part of our daily life. Plastics are in our workplace, at our homes, and everywhere in our lives. The innovation of plastic has helped push our society much further than it would be without plastics, cleaning plastic can be a tremendous headache though. What should we use to clean plastic, in what ways can we clean plastic?
One great thing about plastics is how they maintain for a long time and stay can last for a long time. Plastics is something that usually doesn’t need a lot to maintained other than a little bit of cleaning now and then. One of the first things to think about is what type of cleaning you’ll be doing. First and foremost you’ll want to use warm to hot water to give plastics an initial cleaning. You don’t want to use cold water, cold water doesn’t do a good job of breaking down and removing bacteria.
Begin by rubbing the product with hot water, be sure that you either use a dish rag or a sponge. Don’t use any soap at this time as you are trying to agitate the dirt and help the overall cleaning process. Make sure that you don’t use any type of abrasive cleaners. Once you have finished with the initial rinse you’ll want to focus on the cleaning compound. You want to be sure that your soaps or cleaners don’t include acidic or alkaline based solutions as they can cause your plastics to break down. Focus on soaps, or other specialized cleaners that you buy at your local grocery store. Use warmer water again and create a small mixture of water and cleaning solution and start by rubbing down the product again. Since you started by rinsing the products and giving them a quick scrub they can be cleaned easily.
If you are cleaning something that is small make sure you don’t put it in the dishwasher, as the dishwasher is designed to heat to a very hot temperature which could eventually jeopardize the integrity of your plastics. Heating plastics to very hot temperatures will make them bendable which you don’t want in this type of situation. You don’t want to put your plastics anywhere that gets hot such as clothes washers, dishwashers or even boiling water. Hot temperatures of water is what can destroy plastic. That means things like actual hot temperatures as well so avoid microwaves, ovens and hair driers. A lot of direct heat on plastics will ruin the plastics as well.
If you are cleaning larger plastic chairs, outside furniture needs a different type of cleaning method. Create a mixture of warm water and a bleach based cleaner cleaning discolored plastic. Breakdown the dirt and gunk by giving the chairs a quick rinse. Once you’ve done an initial spray, which greatly helps the overall cleaning process, at this time you can begin to use your bleach and water mixture on the chairs. At this time it’s time to start getting dirty, star brushing or using your sponge on the chairs using a decent amount of the hot water and bleach blend. We typically recommend letting the chairs sit for about 5 minutes after you have washed them, faster which the dirt will really begin to break down. After those five minutes begin to hose down the chairs and the dirt should be completely removed.
It doesn’t matter what type of plastics you’ll be cleaning as the rules apply to all types, otherwise you may have some extremely adverse affects. The plastic that you may want to maintain will eventually begin to break down and it’ll never be the same.
