Kennel cough, also called canine cough, is a highly contagious disease called infectious tracheobronchitis and it can be caused by a bacterial infection, or by any of several common viral infections. With kennel software, symptoms appear 5 to 10 days after infection like a loud dry cough, sometimes followed by a gag and some dogs will appear to vomit, but may actually be coughing up mucus. It will usually run its course on its own, but treatment is highly advocated due to the possibility of dangerous complications. Kennel cough appears mainly as an infection of bordetella bacteria, or as a secondary infection along with canine distemper, canine adenovirus 2, or canine parainfluenza. It is similar to the human whooping cough disease, although it is not transmissible between humans and susceptibility to the disease may increase with the stress of being boarded. It found the name kennel coughing because it is frequently transmitted in kennels and pounds, where numerous dogs are in close proximity and tt has since been renamed canine cough, because it is contagious enough to occur anywhere that dogs gather together, including dog shows, grooming clinics, and training classes. The bordatella bacteria suppress respiratory system immune cells, and also work efficaciously in intensifying with common respiratory viruses. The cough can be cured within 10 days when covered with antibiotics, but can last a month in severe cases. The coughing is often worse at night, can be loud enough to uphold the owner awake, it can cause release of appetite and should be covered quickly to prevent complications, which can include pneumonia. These effective preventive vaccinations are recommended every six months and a vaccination at the time of boarding the dog will not allow enough time for the vaccine to take effect and so it may not prevent infection.
