Ever since I could remember, Mom had run our family business from our home and I grew used to seeing packing crates and foam fillers lying our house. Mom used to keep me near her and allow me to play by her feet while she was working so she can keep an eye on me. The business specialized in figurines that my mom painted and decorated herself, which were perfect for wedding souvenirs and giveaways for special occasions. Now that I’m older, I’ve taken over the business so she could have more time to rest and enjoy her time with my dad and her friends. Business operations are still from our home, but we had a separate building built for it at the back of the house for more room and convenience. Many changes and additions have been introduced to our inventory, but our suppliers have faithfully grown with us and continue to provide our needs. When we started offering customized digital picture albums and music mixes, for example, we were able to get wholesale bubble mailers from a good company that we have trusted for a long time already. Most of the products that we sell are assembled by hand right in our workshop, and some are even handcrafted from scratch. Majority of our clients have been referred to us by word of mouth through satisfied customers that have kept coming back through the years, but I’ve also started to offer our wares on the internet very recently. The response from our online customers are promising, and hopefully our market grows with the help of our efforts through social media. Managing the business and supervising our small number of employees is a far cry from playing under the same long work tables that we still do, but there’s still a long way to go before I can say that I’ve been successful in making a contribution. I’m just glad to be able to give back to my mom for all the sacrifices that she has gone through for me, and doing well for the business is quite an appropriate payback since it helped send me to school and live comfortably while growing up.
